Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

Feliz Cinco de Mayo!

And to mark the occasion, here is Bob Dylan and Isis. I often think of this song for two reasons; one, it is a fantastic song in all ways possible. Second, ISIS, the acronym for the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria and the Levant. The people of Syria do not call their oppressors by the acronym ISIS. ISIS is the acronym created by the western media, particularly, American media. It is rather unfortunate. Isis, the ancient Egyptian goddess–pre-Judaic, pre-Christian, pre-Islamic earth goddess — is the archetypal mother goddess, goddess of fertility, magic, healing, and children. When Seth kills Osiris, his brother and consort of Isis, and dismembers him by cutting Osiris’s body into little pieces, Isis wanders the earth to find each piece of Osiris’s body and puts Osiris back together again. Isis is the autonomous mother goddess, Magna Mater,  who needs nothing from you, me, the terrorists, American media etc. Both the terrorists and the media are equally irrelevant to the goddess Isis. My heart cringes every time I hear stupid people talk about ISIS.

Bob Dylan’s song is a fantastic song; it is a song of dense historical and mythical consciousness. It is about a life-giving, life-sustaining, born of the earth, permanent, pure, and powerful goddess–the Bride and Magna Mater according to Jungian archetypes– to whom the male speaker in the song returns after he sees the results of his useless pursuits.   If at all we have to pollute our ears daily by listening to ISIS this and ISIS that, I hope we will soon hear of the guy with the gun going to the real Isis just to tell her he loves her.

Feliz cinco de mayo!
