Prince Tribute to Freddie Gray

Prince has written a tribute song to Freddie Gray. I look forward to hearing it.  I don’t think there is any more pressing problem in the US right now than the police killing of black men. I come from a state in India, Kerala, where at the height of the Naxalite movement in the mid1970s, Kerala police systematically targeted and murdered young men and women for taking part in radical left insurgency against a very corrupt central government under prime minister Indira Gandhi. The National Emergency period in India suspended all citizen rights and gave police rule by the president’s decree to kill anyone they suspected of doing whatever. Kerala police systematically murdered hundreds of young men and women during the Emergency. The killing of black men by the police is reminiscent of that breakdown of constitutional rights.  I should find an old article I wrote about Mahasweta Devi’s great novel Mother of 1084, about a woman whose son was taken and killed by the police in West Bengal. Bengal and Kerala saw the worst atrocities–both states with radical left politics.
