Dr. Devi

English 220 Unit Three Take Home Exam

Available Points: 50

Due Date: Friday, 24 April, 11pm in D2L dropbox

General notes

  1. Please read the questions carefully. Answer the complete scope of the questions.
  2. Incomplete responses get incomplete points.
  3. Please proofread carefully. A typo is an error. I do not deduct points for grammatical, spelling and other sentence and word level errors for in-class exams, because I know you are pressed for time. However, I will deduct points for errors in the take-home exam. I will deduct 2 points off of any individual response with more than 4 proofreading errors per response. Please proofread carefully; this is a language and literature class.
  4. In general, please support your discussions with textual evidence. There is really no intelligent substitute for close reading. Our opinions are fine, but they need to be based on the text.
  5. In writing your responses, please refer to the authors, historical periods, and literary and philosophical movements correctly, where needed.

Answer all eight questions in no less than 7-8 sentences each. Incomplete responses get incomplete points.   (5 points each)

  1. Discuss the encounter between the prostitute Liza and the underground man as a study in power relations that can enter into human interactions. How does it start? How does it resolve itself? Discuss with specific details from the text.
  2. Compare and contrast the world-views represented in Baudelaire’s To the Reader and Correspondences with specific details and references to the text.
  3. What is the thematic and philosophical significance of the underground man’s polemic against “books” in the concluding sections of the Notes from the Underground? Support your response with specific details from the text.
  4. Discuss the thematic relevance of the concept of “Evolution” and the use of animal imagery in Lu Xun’s Diary of a Mad Man. Support your response with specific details from the text.
  5. How does Gregor’s transformation into a vermin transform the other members of his family? Support your response with specific details from the text.
  6. What is the symbolic and thematic relevance of the references to infancy, childhood, and the child in Rimbaud’s The Drunken Boat? Support your response with specific details from the text.
  7. How do Lu Xun and Kafka complicate the relationship between an individual and his family in The Diary of a Mad Man and The Metamorphosis? Support your response with specific details from the text.
  8. Compare and contrast the narrative and thematic significance of the presence of “the unreal” or “the fantastic” in The Diary of a Mad Man and The Metamorphosis. Support your response with specific details from the text.

Essay question (10 points)

Write an essay of no less than two typed, double-spaced pages in response to the following prompt. Your essay must have a coherent focus and a well-stated claim supported by textual evidence. Proofread carefully.

Compare and contrast the narrative voices (the voice that is telling the story) of Dostoevsky’s Notes from the Underground, and Lu Xun’s Diary of a Madman (the actual diary and not the framing story). Are these narrators mad? Are they sane? How do these two writers use their particular narrative perspectives to engage us in social and philosophical critiques of their respective societies at the cusp of intellectual and cultural modernity? Discuss with specific examples from the texts.
