“naturally amazing”

In order to delay going to bed indefinitely, my daughter started telling me about all the latest heartbreaks–who dumped who–at the high school and who is considered cute and who is considered hot.  Some boys and girls who I knew by name are no longer hot and cute–that was last week. I love telling you these things, mama, she said. Yes, honey, now please go to bed, I said. I have to wake up at 4 and grade; I am tired, I said; I have been up since four this morning. My daughter got up dramatically and sashayed over to me and hugged me and kissed me and said the following walking slowly backwards to the kitchen, again, dramatically-

I love you, my beautiful mother!

You are the chicken to my soup

You are the green to my bean

You are the blue to my whale

You are the trunk to my elephant . . .

Did you make this up, honey? I asked her.

Yes, mother, I am naturally amazing! I could do comedy! my daughter said, pausing at the stairs, bending like a stage actor, and blowing a kiss.

Good night, my funny girl!
