Electric switch and other Bad Metaphors

Ben Okri wins this year’s Bad Sex Writing award from the Literary Review. Among other rhetorical crimes, Okri calls the woman’s nipple an electric switch. Unpardonable. It reminds me of this very funny scene in Kundan Shah’s Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron where the bumbling detectives try to rescue each other in the dark inside their stake-out, which has suddenly lost power, and suddenly we hear Nina Gupta cry out “ouch!” and Naseeruddin Shah says apologetically, “I am so sorry; I thought it was the light switch.” Ben Okri, have you been watching Hindi movies? Is that where you are getting your inspiration from? You must be; you have a stray rocket going off in the night.
