Obituary: Richard Holbrooke (1941-2010)

Guardian’s obituary here. BBC obituary here. I was just finishing up graduate school during the Balkan war, just a sad sad sad period in human history and I remember reading everyday in the newspapers about Holbrooke’s work in the Balkans. Some day when I have time I would like to study the actual work of people like Holbrooke — what is political diplomacy? What kind of transaction is it? Very interesting man. Very interesting lifetime work. I wonder what he would have done in Afghanistan. Sometimes that is all it takes–one sensible leader to make conditions workable for an enduring political change; change cannot be brought from the outside, a country has to change on its own. I look at Afghanistan and Pakistan and think of what the people of that region has been through for what, 300 years? and who knows Holbrooke might have turned out right?
