Fish Story and Fish Wife

Two beautiful poems.

Fish Story

Old Lady fishes

Baits her hook with words

All day talks fish

Through a hole in the ice

End of the day

Sets a spruce bush in the hole

Packs her story home

–(Katherine McNamara)

I’m a casual friend of dangerous Edna

All her stories come tumbling out

I find myself pinned to the room

Her fishknife wields in the light

As her men lead her along

The fish at the cannery

With her red scarf and black boots

Give up their spirit to her

She carves them with skill

They become pieces of the sun

–(Cheryl Morse)
